Right now
Micro-consulting on web application strategy. If you’d like to have a chat about your project or idea, get in touch.
I like to help people with their business models, concept development, general industry awareness, connecting to others and finding partnerships.
I’m also
- Launching a startup with David Stone and Pete Barr-Watson
- Consulting with Video Juicer on their product launch
- Curating consulting group Hidden People
- Doing micro-consulting, working with people in bite-size times of 1-4 hours at a time
- Working with my 2003 startup, Metranet, on next generation wireless and mobile data infrastructure. (if you’re an investor excited about shaking up the telecoms industry, get in touch)
- Running coworking meets in Brighton
- Attending conferences, mostly only the ones that extend beyond my normal radar
Previously I was
- User Experience (UX) Evangelist at Microsoft
- Interaction Designer and Strategist at Comic Relief
Web geek since 1996, based in the exceptional web community that is Brighton, UK. Had lives in startups, big corps, agencies and freelance. I now focus my time on reading, writing, thinking and talking about web strategy, doing and building businesses online, and visiting cake shops with fellow geeks.
Current phrase: “have fun, make money, change the world”
Ongoing
Together with David Stone (aka davestone) and Pete Barr-Watson (aka pbw) I run Dash Labs, a stealthy group building web tools, services and platforms.
Previously
Upstairs at Gemini
Opened Brighton’s first geek cafe/bar. Sea views, good wifi, lots of power sockets, and host to great industry and community events.
Microsoft
In 2008 I was the User Experience (UX) Evangelist at Microsoft UK. Mainly working with agencies and startups with Microsoft’s up and coming design and interaction and webapp focused applications and platforms. These include, but in no way are exclusively:
Silverlight, Expression Suite, Photosynth, Deep Zoom, Surface, Mobile, WPF.
I also identified and engaged with industry leaders on new Microsoft technologies. I worked with them on speaking at conferences like ReMix UK, and smaller events such as local and national user groups. The role acted as a bridge between Microsoft and the web community, for both creators and consumers.
Comic Relief
In 2004 I joined Comic Relief’s small new media team as interaction designer and strategist.
Over almost 4 years we worked on projects such as:
In my time there, most notably, I created the “white band” for websites (see examples), which drove hundreds of millions of unique visitors to the Make Poverty History site and has been replicated numerous times by other marketing campaigns.
I was also responsible for developing smooth, high conversion, donation processes for each of the campaigns. Myself and other original members of the team were also the voice of reality for most other departments in the organisation :)
