Being 26

Friday, March 17th, 2006

In the middle of February i turned 26, the wrong side of 20. Which was almost imediately pointed out to me by my father as actually being the right side of 30! As usual i was probably being a “Glass half empty” person.

So as a result of realising that actually being 26 isn’t so bad, i’ve decided to make sure that i feel the same about being 30 when i get there.

Firstly I’ve started taking more photos, something i used to do a lot of six or seven years ago. So I bought a new camera and started using my neglected Flickr account. So far so good, I’ve got almost a hundred photos up and I’ve found a bunch of people I know also using Flickr. I’ve encouraged a bunch of people to start using Flickr too!

Micro Hosting

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

I’m almost up to the point where I’m hosting 100 domains and associated sites and email for friends, small businesses and my own projects. It’s a nice thing to be able to do for people. Most non-nerds would have real trouble organising all the things that need to be done to get to the point of having your own website and email address.

Trouble and Process

As well as finding the people or companies to work with, these are the some of the major required steps:

  • Think of a domain name
  • Register the domain name
  • Understand the desired results from the site
  • Work out what scale and functionality is needed from the host and server
  • Build the site, upload the site, test the site, market the site
  • Make the site appear in search engines (SEO)
  • Keep the site updated
  • Setup mailboxes or forwarding

Most people would not realise there can be so many steps, and this could be quite a daunting list of things to do!
