1. Show & Tuttle

During the eGovernment hack day, RewiredState, a bunch of us were taking a break downstairs at the Skiff, where the projector was set up.

Brian and I started showing the others in the room the QR Code project we had been working on, and so started a few hours of browsing the internet, discovering things and showing each other cool stuff we’d found, or saved earlier.

Yeah maybe we did also just watch a view videos, or geek over various map mashups, but we all came away with a feeling that the format worked really well, even though it hadn’t been planned.

The guys upstairs finishing their project came down and joined us, and so we wrapped up and went to the pub. We all learned something, shared something, and felt just a bit inspired.

So I’ve decided to organise a similar session.. 27th March from 5pm, at the Skiff, sign up here. There is no agenda, and no pressure to show anything, just come and hang out and see where the browsing and conversation takes us.. I’ll also add a wiki page for each of these meets, where we can list all the things we browsed and add some notes.

    Sign up here.

We’ve very kindly got a small sponsorship for beer and projector hire, which has covered half the cost. If you want to chuck in a fiver (or more!) that’d be appreciated, there’s nothing like beer karma for geeks :) Click here to make a donation. Thx! And hope to see you there.

P.s. Tuttle coworking is meeting weekly, upstairs at the Sanctuary (map), at 10am on Fridays. All are welcome, go signup on Upcoming here.

P.p.s. Almost forgot to thank the guys at the Skiff for letting us use the room! Thanks :)

  2. You’re invited to predict the next 100 years

    Up to the challenge?

Brian Suda and I (and many others!) seem to continually discuss what may be.

We’re geeks, obviously, but as Chris Messina quoted while at Reboot, “Alpha-geeks are becoming alpha-citizens.“, and thus we discuss all manner of subjects:

    • technology
    • sociology
    • ecology
    • business
    • ethics
    • psychology

The list goes on. But all these conversations eventually evaluate the past, and then try to work out how things may change. Sometimes for the worse, but hopefully for the better!

Finding inspiration from an article written 100 years ago in The Ladies Home Journal, predicting the year 2000, we decided to try and do what they did and predict the future, 1 year from now, then 10, and then 100 years to the year 2100!

You’re now invited to join us in these predictions, firstly online, and then at a short meet up just before the dConstruct conference in Brighton. When we meet, we’ll also discuss the predictions submitted online.

So go submit your predictions, and then join us on the day!

http://predictions.sudabot.com/ < -- This is the important bit!

We’ll meet on September the 4th in Brighton at 5.30pm (upcoming), location TBD.

P.s. don’t feel any pressure to be 100% accurate, this is supposed to be fun too :)

  3. The Brighton Social Media Cafe

Since I attended the my first London Social Media Cafe (also referred to as the Tuttle club after Harry Tuttle) I wanted to recreate the atmosphere and environment at an event here in Brighton.

The room, while small, was crowded with people. Some old friends, and many that hadn’t attended before. All caught up in the excitement of being around people with genuinely interesting backgrounds and experiences. The conversation was loud and enthusiastic, if you know me then you’ll know that I thrive in that :)

So now I’m ready to announce that the Brighton branch will be starting on Saturday the 16th of August, at 11am, upstairs at the Quadrant.

    What is it?
The Social Media Cafe, or Tuttle Club, is a place for people interested in social media to gather, get acquainted, and to plot, scheme, and share.. emphasis on open and interesting conversating!

    Who should come?
If you’re interested in the future of media, how we organise, share, produce and enjoy it, then come along. If you’re an artist, film maker, geek, musician, designer, writer, photographer, or anything close or related, then come along. If you want to meet like minds, come along.

With the help of sponsors (which we welcome more of!) the coffee is free, and there should be some breakfast snacks to get us going. There’s free wifi, so bring your laptops if you need to get some work done or want to show off what you’ve been to..

I’m really looking forward to seeing you there!

Update: We have our first sponsor, local social media agency Nixon McInnes. Cheers guys!

  4. The BIG One is over

So The BIG One is over, Red Nose Day (flickr) has been and gone for another 2 years, and I find myself with little to do. The cleanup has started, updating the site to reflect the events of the night, what the public got up to, and ultimately how much money we made. Of course the job is far from over, there’ll be debriefs, accounting, data management, partner relationships to look after, and an evaluation of how things could have been done better. This should keep us busy for a month or 2.

Then on to Sport Relief! 2008’s Sport Relief has been brought forward to March, so we have to get a head start. It usually happens in July. Even as I write that i know it’s not true. We’ll do some concepts, have some meetings, draw up a big list of nice-to-haves, but the work won’t start for a while yet. Then it’ll be a mad dash to the finish line. I work better under pressure, so I’m not that fussed about that, but when you have to deliver so much right at the last minute, some things get over looked or rushed, which is not good for anyone.

I propose that this time we cut back on features, cut back on design, and cut back on meetings. Let’s just do what will give the most result and help us to connect to our supporters best. Thing is, we have to try to appeal to a very broad market. Most of which are not web savvy, and may only interact with us once. How we get the most out of them will be the problem we’ll be trying to solve.

Meanwhile, I read my RSS feed looking for inspiration as usual, wondering how long the quiet in the office will last and catching up on the last 6 months of sleep.

P.S. Red Nose Day had quite an impact online, I’ll post all the things I collected from the web soon…
